“Personal Care Tips for Women”- Go Organic!

Top Women’s Personal Care Tips

  1. Look at the label
The biggest and most complicated issue regarding the cosmetics we use are the unregulated chemicals that are used to make them. From the consumer’s point of view there are certain common substances to look out for (more on that in the Getting Techie section). The best advice is to learn the main ones to avoid and then check the product ingredient label. Or rather than scouring every label, you can also choose a cosmetics company that has signed the
CSC’s compact and uses certified organic and natural ingredients.

  2. Get a natural smile with natural toothpaste
Unfortunately, while we like a bright smile, many major brands of toothpaste contain chemicals like parabens, titanium dioxide for whitening, and high levels of fluoride. There has been concern for some time about the level of fluoride that we ingest on a daily basis both through drinking water and toothpaste. While we are told that fluoride helps fight tooth decay, high doses can also be poisonous. Since mid-1997, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has mandated all toothpastes containing fluoride to carry a poison warning. Luckily, as with deodorants, there are natural toothpastes on the market. Many people also find that just using a bit of baking soda will do the trick as well.
  3. Tame your mane with healthy hair care
The number of products we women put in our hair must easily outnumber the amount we put on our skin. Shampoo, conditioner, serum, wax, gel, hair spray, color…the list goes on. Hair, like the skin, is extremely absorbent and all those products can contain potentially harmful chemicals. Watch out for: shampoos and conditioners containing petroleum products; hair dyes with carcinogenic coal tar (N.B. coal tar can also be present in strong dandruff and psoriasis shampoos); hairsprays and hair gels containing petroleum derivatives, formaldehyde, phthalates, and synthetic fragrance. Read the Getting Techie below section for more information on all these chemicals. Check out our Favorites section to find brands that make safe alternatives for all these products.
  4. Stay away from fossil fuels with petroleum-free products
Most of us aren’t too keen on the overuse of fossil fuels anymore. There are a surprising number of petroleum derivatives to be found in not only our cosmetics but also in other personal care products such as the plastics used in sanitary pads. Mineral oil, paraffin, and propylene glycol can be found as basic ingredients in the majority of cosmetic products. Once again, is it essential to read the ingredients and look for certified labels. One of the most obvious products using petroleum is lip balm and lip gloss—we’d go for the beeswax instead!
  5. Maintain that healthy glow with a healthy, chemical-free tan
There is much debate about the actual efficacy of SPF factors as well as studies into the potentially harmful ingredients used in sunscreens.
According to The Ecologist, “Because sun creams encourage a false sense of security, we stay out in the sun far longer than is smart or safe. Few of us apply sun creams as regularly or as thickly as manufacturers recommend. Chemicals that provide sun protection are also potentially irritating to the skin, and irritated skin is more prone to sun damage. Emerging research also suggests that some of these chemicals are oestrogen mimics that persist in the environment and in the body.” We still think it’s important to protect our skin, so look for natural sun creams and/or cover up in the sun and stay out of the midday heat.
  6. Don’t be cruel; avoid animal testing
We’re sure that even those of us who aren’t vegetarian or vegan would agree that testing cosmetics on animals is unnecessary and unethical. Look for the
Humane Cosmetics Standard (HCS) label on products to check they are cruelty free. It is the world’s only international standard for cosmetic or toiletry products that are not animal tested. The HCS was launched in 1998 by an international coalition of animal protection groups from across the European Union and North America, including the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments.
  7. Be kind to the earth with organic products
The above information might seem scary and cast all sorts of doubts over the products you are currently using, but, in the Getting Techie section, we explain clearly the key ingredients to watch out for. On the positive side there are plenty of products that are not only cruelty free, but certified organic as well. A word of warning though, don’t be taken in by words such as Natural, Organic, or Hypoallergenic on the packaging; you need to make sure that the product has a certified label. You can look for the Eco-Cert label as well as the USDA Organic seal which is used in 80 countries around the world. Using organically produced ingredients ensures that not only are your cosmetics healthy for the environment, but it also means you don’t have to worry about your skin absorbing chemical residues either.
  8. Stay healthy with organic tampons and sanitary pads
It is well known that tampons come emblazoned with warnings about toxic shock syndrome. While rare, it still does occur in women who use super-absorbent and synthetic tampons. However TSS is not the only health danger in using these products. The chlorine bleaching that is used to make tampons and sanitary pads look “clean” produces dioxin, a known carcinogen and pollutant. Dioxin settles in the fat cells of our bodies and stays there for the rest of our lives, building up cumulatively over time. Therefore, increased exposure means increased risk. We recommend looking for 100% cotton tampons and sanitary pads, organic if possible.
  9. Avoid the landfill altogether with menstrual cups
Another way of avoiding the toxins related to tampons and sanitary pads is to use a menstrual cup. This has several benefits. Not only is it reusable, but you will be saving money every month by not buying all those disposable products. Furthermore, if you are not buying them then you won’t be needing to dispose of them, therefore sending less to landfill. A menstrual cup is convenient, cheaper, healthier, and better for the environment too. There are cups made from rubber and silicone, however it is thought that the silicone cups are better for those who might have sensitive skin or are allergy prone.
  10. Make your own beauty treatments at home
If you are keen to escape the marketing hype and save yourself some money you can always go into your kitchen and concoct some of your own delicious beauty treatments. That way you’ll know exactly what’s in the mix without having worry about identifying harmful chemicals on the back of the bottle and you can choose whatever ingredients you want. Although homemade means more time, it also means more satisfaction. Have a look at the links to the TH archives below where you’ll find some great homemade recipes. In the further reading section there are also some links to articles on homemade beauty.
  • Use aluminum-free deodorant
Aluminum, which is commonly used in antiperspirants, has been found to not only cause skin irritation, but the inflammation caused may spread beyond the areas where the antiperspirant is being applied, leading to more general inflammation. Antiperspirants also have another downside: by blocking pores, they prevent the body from eliminating toxins through perspiration, which reduces the body’s ability to regulate its temperature. Instead of using antiperspirant, try using natural deodorant brands that don’t contain aluminum, or try the crystal stick which uses natural mineral salts. Get more details in this

  • “How marriage should be”

This article really hit home with me because Our kids are our future and given the world that we live in, I think kids are not giving the proper examples of how they should be. A healthy marriage is very far and in between. Kids are so used to growing up with just mom and never really truly knowing their dads or they are brought up in abusive situations so on and so forth. So when I read this article. I felt an overwhelming  passion to put it out there so maybe it will reach the right people. This is how a real marriage should be.  Did you know that marriage is ordained by God?

One of the greatest benefits of an Obama presidency is hidden in plain sight: the relationship between Michelle and Barack. They provide a great role model of a healthy relationship, at a time when such models are sorely needed.
    For example…
Imagine having a president who is not distracted from the nation’s business by the stresses of secrets in the presidential marriage.
Imagine having a president who likes his partner and values her as an equal, a president who touches his wife affectionately in public and actually listens to her when she talks!
Fortunately we don’t have to imagine it, because we already have that potential at the tip of our voting fingers. For Americans, one of the most important aspects of an Obama presidency is being overlooked: the model of a healthy relationship. In the 28 years of our own marriage, we’ve worked with more than 4,000 couples in our office and seminars, so we have a reasonably good idea of what kinds of behavior one sees in a healthy relationship. For example, Michelle and Barack do something we’ve never seen before in a presidential couple: they actually look directly at each other when they’re speaking to each other. They also laugh at each other’s humor, and they allow their sexual attraction for each other to be visible. Contrast that with other presidential marriages, in which the sexual attraction to each other was not visible but their sexual attraction to others became highly visible. Michelle and Barack talk openly about their feelings for each other. They’re real.
Why would their relationship be a benefit to the American public and the world at large? The main reason is that it would be genuinely useful to have a visible, public role model of what a healthy relationship looks like. Over the last fifty years there’s been a parade of not-so-great relationship models in the White House. They range from idol-worship (Nancy’s perpetually-adoring glaze, oops we mean gaze, at Ronnie) to the sternly maternal façade of the first Mrs. Bush. We’ve witnessed White House marriages strained to the breaking point by secrets. The country lost 50 million dollars and a year of the government’s focus because one president actually did have sex with “that woman” but wouldn’t tell us the truth until he was outed by DNA.
How about Camelot? Many of us were fooled into thinking the Kennedys were the very picture of a Perfect Relationship. There was a handsome, rich Prince with knockout hair, coupled with a doll-Princess whose faraway smile and breathy, little-girl voice made her seem heaven-sent. Unfortunately, it was all just a fantasy. In reality, John was a serial philanderer and Jackie was a chain-smoker who swore like a sailor and dropped the little-girl voice the moment she walked off-stage. There’s no way to measure the productivity that was lost because the president’s staff had to earn part of their government salaries ushering women in and out of the White House, all with exquisite timing (and with the look-the-other-way collusion of the media.)
However, you don’t have to go back in that far in history to see a strange or strained White House marriage. Have you ever seen the current occupant of the White House speak, much less listen, to his wife in public? For example, do we ever get to hear from the real Laura Bush, the one who disagrees completely with the far-right views of her husband on such matters as women’s reproductive rights? No, because she’s been muzzled, like most of her predecessors, and sealed off behind the glazed smile of the Perfect Presidential Wife.
It’s high time we got to see an honest, loving, real relationship in the White House. If you’re like us, you probably don’t want to spend the next four years hearing how much the perfectly-coiffed Mrs. McCain has spent on her outfit, which of their nine houses they’re weekending at or which of their thirteen cars they’re wheeling around in. There’s something bigger to worry about, though. If the actuarial tables have any predictive value, a McCain presidency would soon become a Palin presidency, and that is a scenario truly frightening to contemplate.
President Palin would be desperately trying to comprehend and handle business during one of the most trying times in our nation’s history, while taking care of a special needs baby, riding herd on pregnant teenagers, foul-mouthed hockey-jock son-in-laws and other household dramas. On the brighter side, a Palin White House would provide one exciting possibility for our increasingly tabloid-obsessed culture: the perfect capstone for Jerry Springer’s career! He would make an ideal Chief of Staff or Sergeant-At-Arms, charged with keeping the gun-totin’, hockey-stick-wielding clan from wrecking the furniture (and each other) or blowing away a moose for sport on the White House lawn.
Here’s a better idea: Elect Barack Obama. That way, we get the gift of seeing two people having an easeful friendship with each other. We get as a role model two people who communicate with each other as equals and stand beside each other as true partners. If we elect Barack Obama we are electing a new possibility in our relationship lives as a nation: respect, affection and authenticity. Michelle and Barack speak clearly and openly. You know she won’t bullshit you or embarrass you by playing the demure little wife. We’re ready to see that kind of relationship, and we hope you are, too. The question is: are we as a nation ready to end our national addiction to duplicity, phony adoration and Stepford wifedom in the White House? If not, we’re going to get what we deserve.
We have a chance now to make a real difference in the world. If we elect Barack Obama, we can all focus on the critical challenges that must be met now. Speaking personally, we feel a sense of warmth and pride when we think about the support and love the Obamas have for each other. We breathe easier when we see how they live their lives with balance, honesty and clarity. They’re the real deal. In November, let’s give ourselves this new mirror of our own value

” Another great thing about Green Tea!”

Drinking Green tea may not only prevent cancer- it may also shrink tumors. University of Mississippi Medical Center researchers gave water mixed with a green tea antixiodant called EGCG to mice with breast cancer. After five weeks, their tumors were 66 percent smaller and 68 percent lighter than those in mice who drank just water

“You are where God wants you to be”

You Are Where God Wants You To Be
    =======================

The next time your morning seems to be going wrong and the kids
are slow getting dressed and you can’t seem to find the car keys
and you hit every traffic light, don’t get mad or frustrated.
Praise God instead, because God is at work watching over you.

After Sept. 11, I happened to call a man on business whom I
didn’t know and haven’t, nor will probably ever talk to again.
But on this particular day, he felt like talking. He was the
head of security for a company that had invited the remaining
members of another company who had been decimated by the attack
on the Twin Towers to share their office space.

With his voice full of awe, he told me stories of why these
people are alive and their counterparts no longer were. In the
end, all the stories were just about little things that happen
    to us.

You might know the head of the company got in late that day
    because his son started kindergarten.

Another fellow is alive because it was his turn to bring
donuts. There were other stories that I hope and pray will
someday be gathered and put in a book. The one that struck me
was the man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning, took
the various means to get to work but before he got there, he developed a blister on his foot. He stopped at a drugstore to
buy a Band-Aid. That is why he is alive today.

Now when I am stuck in traffic, miss an elevator, turn back to
answer a ringing telephone… all the little things that annoy
me, I think to myself, this is exactly where God wants me to
be at this very moment. May God continue to bless you with all those annoying little
    things.

If you delete this, it’s okay too…

7 reasons to drink Green Tea

    CUT YOUR CANCER RISK
Several polyphenols - the potent antioxidants green tea’s famous for - seem to help keep cancer cells from gaining a foothold in the body, by discouraging their growth and then squelching the creation of new blood vessels that tumors need to thrive. Study after study has found that people who regularly drink green tea reduce their risk of breast, stomach, esophagus, colon, and/or prostate cancer.
    SOOTHE YOUR SKIN
Got a cut, scrape, or bite, and a little leftover green tea? Soak a cotton pad in it. The tea is a natural antiseptic that relieves itching and swelling. Try it on inflamed breakouts and blemishes, sunburns, even puffy eyelids. And that’s not all. In the lab, green tea helps block sun-triggered skin cancer, whether you drink it or apply it directly to the skin - which is why you’re seeing green tea in more and more sunscreens and moisturizers.
    STEADY YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE
Having healthy blood pressure - meaning below 120/80 - is one thing. Keeping it that way is quite another. But people who sip just half a cup a day are almost 50 percent less likely to wind up with hypertension than non-drinkers. Credit goes to the polyphenols again (especially one known as ECGC). They help keep blood vessels from contracting and raising blood pressure.
PROTECT YOUR MEMORY, OR YOUR MOM’S
Green tea may also keep the brain from turning fuzzy. Getting-up-there adults who drink at least two cups a day are half as likely to develop cognitive problems as those who drink less. Why? It appears that the tea’s big dose of antioxidants fights the free-radical damage to brain nerves seen in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
    STAY YOUNG
The younger and healthier your arteries are, the younger and healthier you are. So fight plaque build-up in your blood vessels, which ups the risk of heart disease and stroke, adds years to your biological age (or RealAge), and saps your energy too. How much green tea does this vital job take? About 10 ounces a day, which also deters your body from absorbing artery-clogging fat and cholesterol.
    LOSE WEIGHT
Oh yeah, one more thing. Turns out that green tea speeds up your body’s calorie-burning process. In the every-little-bit-counts department, this is good news!

YOUR REPUTATION is worth more than money or position…. Your reputation is what produces continuous blessings…. A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold… -Proverbs 22 and verse 1

    “Patience is a Virtue”

September 7, the 1st Sunday in the month, I woke up at 7 15 a.m , and made the decision that I was going to go attend Dale Bronner’s “Word of Faith” Church. So I got up and was so happy to hear that the word was “Patience” The word was taken from the 40th Chapter of Isiah(verse28) This is my intpretation of the seminar.

Everything is moving faster today .Companies are trying to sell that faster is better. We have to keep in mind that if we live life fast, we will not enjoy  “The journey” . If we are always constantly rushing through life, we end up “burnt out”. Our children are getting exposed to stuff to quick. Have you ever said to yourself that this little girl is too fast? Children are our fruit. When you add additives and man made hormones to fruit it becomes less sweet , like children. Our society suffers from “Hurry Sickness” We all hurry up to wait. Patience is a virtue. Patience is a mindset.

Hurry Sickness causes us to become impatient. Patience is primarily cultivated through trials, tribulations, and circumstances. Major things that try are patience are the following:

    1. dealing with annoying people

    2.waiting in line

    3.driving

    4.computers

    5.being put on hold

    6.traveling

When you become patient it can provide:

    1.better health

    2.better relationships

    3.better decisions

    4.better life

When you sense yourself becoming impatient, You should apply discipline to your thoughts.

“They that wait on the Lord, Shall renew their strength”

Patience starts with the realization that you need it. It requires strong desire& motivation. It is hard work. It also requires Pratice. Pratice, and more Pratice. It enriches all aspects of your life. Now Patience also has its limits. Sometimes if taken to far it could turn into cowardice. These situations dont call for Patience

    - Crime

    - Cruelty

    - Infringements of rights

You need Grace, Wisdom, and Diplomacy to deal with those things. Now please understand that sitting around waiting for good things to happen is not Patience, that is Laziness and or Stupidity.

Just like a Farmer plants his seed and then waits for his harvest to grow. If you haven’t sown seeds, Why are you waiting for a harvest? Do something while your waiting for your harvest. Serve God. While you are waiting on your breakthrough or change- Go out and serve God- Go help someone in need. Give your time to worthy causes. Here are some things that you can do now to help practice Patience.

    1. Be prepared; be realistic by expecting that things will be delayed (anything that is man-made, will fail, its not if… its a matter of when)

2.Have a plan; so if you get stuck …you got something to do.

3.Ask yourself this (rhetorical)question- If I allow this incident to get me angry, Will it make me better or worse?

    4. Call a friend who can take your mind off of the frustration

    5. Give yourself a pep talk,talk to yourself(its ok)

    6. Lastly(Most importantly) Pray. Ask God for grace to endure. Ask God for his will to be accomplished through the delay. At the end of the day, The delay may have very well saved your life.

Always remember that when you inspire others , you aren’t doing anything but strengthen yourself.

    “Depth of Gratitude”

    Depth of gratitude

Abundance and gratitude are inextricably linked. By living with gratitude, you open yourself to life’s immense abundance.

If you are a little bit thankful for this, and a little thankful for that, just every so often, you’ll have glimpses of abundance. When you enable and allow yourself to be continuously thankful for every big and little thing, your life will be immersed in abundance all the time.

It may seem strange to feel thankful for those events in your life that appear to be negative. Yet it is precisely by being thankful that you can identify the opportunities for transforming the setbacks and obstacles into successes.

You may not think it’s worth the time and effort to be thankful for all the little, seemingly insignificant things in your life. However, without the little things there would be no big things.

Seek to develop a depth of gratitude by seizing every opportunity to be thankful. Make genuine gratitude a constant companion to who you are, in all that you do.

As your gratitude grows deeper and more all-encompassing, life’s abundance shines more brilliantly for you. Be truly, constantly thankful, and there is no end to the level of abundance that you will experience.

    – Ralph Marston

    Thanks again Duane

    “Constraining your Weaknesses”

Today at church part of the lesson focused on “constraining your weaknesses”. Your weaknesses being the sin and temptation you continue to be in. Constrain means to force, to restrain. So “constrain your weaknesses”.

    Romans 12:3
Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.

This verse is saying that God has given you the power to know yourself better than anyone else does. God has given us this power as an advantage against sin, and our struggles with temptation. We all have our issues with temptation; some experience the same, while others have very different difficulties. As young adults pleasure is found in sex, alcohol, drugs, self-esteem, status/ popularity, money, etc. You know that going over that person’s house after a certain time of night is going to lead to things, or hanging with a certain crowd means experiencing and participating in certain behavior. The problem is not that the opportunity is there. The problem is that you accept and involve yourself in it.

As a result, we get caught up in things that shouldn’t be happening. Negative things forever exist in the world. However, they don’t become apart of us, we become apart of them. You see drugs, sex, status, money, has always been the same. It is our experiences and involvement with these things, which allow us a higher probability of being at risk. Unprotected sex, unplanned pregnancies, DUI, behavior that only happens when intoxicated, drug charges, fired because of failed drug tests, sleeping with someone to feel better about ourselves (or to cover up painful emotions), doing things out of our character to fit in or to be accepted, illegal ways to make money, etc.

Since becoming closer to Christ, I have had the privilege of being somewhat of a counselor. People share with me things that you wouldn’t believe is going on in their life. Not even I believed them, when I hear certain stories. Why? They don’t give off the persona of dealing with or doing the things they talk about. The people are average, everyday, college students and grads, just like us. Truthfully, we go through the same things they do. There are those of us who aren’t dealing with it, but are headed down the same path.

We have to realize and take responsibility for our actions. Just because something bad hasn’t happened to us, doesn’t mean we are invincible. It only takes one time. Diseases, death, jail, etc. are very real. It shouldn’t take a STD, getting pregnant, being arrested, losing our identity, acquiring a bad reputation, getting shot, etc. to make a change for the better. That is not the plan that God has for our lives. Seek him and follow his word. It is the key to life. Remember everything you have is because of him. He shouldn’t have to take it away to get your attention.

It is hard to no longer seek to fulfill the desires and pleasures of the flesh, but it is mandatory. Whether we talk regularly, occasionally, or not at all I will be praying for you.
