“Sex in Our Society”

Hey guys Just wanted to share my article that was posted on MTVStayingAlive.org

Check out this guest post by Tera N. Thoma as part of our Leadership theme of blogs on our site. Tera talks about the role she feels sex now plays in our society and why she has decided to save herself until she finds a partner that she truly loves.

Sex is many things to many people. If you are like most folks, you may seem to look at it like a recreational sport; something you do because it is the normal human function. Some may do it because everyone else is doing it, it’s in the movies we watch and the music we love to sing- along to. We all know that sex sells, ask Beyonce, Britney Spears, Lady Ga Ga and they all use their sexiness to make them good and wealthy.

What’s YOUR favorite song? We don’t see is the effects of sex in our society but I believe it’s there. As a black woman, I have a 70% chance of becoming a single mom, I also realize  that if I have unprotected sex with someone -  I am potentially having sex with ALL their previous partners as well. I bet the artists don’t sing about that.

I know the word “abstinence” is one of the biggest turn-offs of all time, but when are we going to stop conforming to the ways of the world? Look at how sex has caught up to us as a society. “Baby mothers” and “Baby fathers” have become common phrases in our generation, so much in fact that folks go on Maury, just to find out who their “Baby father” is. We even get to watch successful shows like “16 and Pregnant” all the while praying that these young folks will get it together for the sake of their kids.

I believe that sex is something that God made for us to share with our husbands and wives. Sex was designed to keep us healthy and certain sexual positions can heal specific organs in our body. I bet you never learned this from watching your favorite make out movie. Yes, it’s true you can learn about sex and it’s intended purposes by researching tantric sex. Don’t get me wrong, sex is an awesome thing, it’s just that we are abusing it.

I decided earlier this year that I was going to become celibate. I believe that this was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I no longer want to share my spirit with an undeserving soul. Now that I truly understand the purpose of sex, I never ever want to misuse it again. Sex is powerful and should be used as directed. Sex should not be used to get or keep a man. Sex should not be used as a sport. Sex should be between a man and woman that truly have each other’s best interest at heart. Just because the ways of the world seem right doesn’t make them right.

It takes a much stronger person to dare to be different than it does to just fall in line with every one else. Remember that your body is your temple. God didn’t create you, just to give yourself to any and everything. It’s your life and your body, take care of it.
